It's all or nothing!  I mean, listen, you only live once and you need to push the petal to the metal and give it all that you have every minute of every single day.  Anything less than do or die is for losers!  I'm a winner and winners push it hard enough to see blood and sweat hit the floor, right?  If I die in the middle of the next set of squats or leg presses, so be it.  I'm ready to die.  In fact, if I die under the leg sled while pressing 1800 lbs, I wouldn't be any happier.  The good Lord will welcome me into His heavenly Kingdom and I will thank Him for the new legs and spine that I crushed in the workout that killed me.  Wow...would that be awesome :)

Yes, I'm being facetious.  But believe me, the aforementioned words are not far from the truth of my extreme mentality--at least the OLD me.  I could bore you with endless stories of my excessive determination.  For instance, there was the time I did thousands of situps consecutively because I heard someone doubted my ability to do it.  It took hours to complete and my abs were sore for weeks.  Then there was the time I bench pressed over 500 lbs on a broken weight bench that was unable to hold the barbell and ME at the same time. I didn't care.  Tony is not going to let the broken bench get in the way of his new lifting record. Heck, if I end going through the floor, so be it.

LOL...Yeah, those were good times.   However, I learned early on that winners learn how to cultivate patience, temperance and balance.  Without balance and self-control, you will wind up being a waste product of fallen dreams and misspent aspirations.   I know it's not easy.  As you can see from what I wrote already, I speak from experience.

Do you really want to make your dreams come true? Do you want to be as strong 20 years from now as you are today?  Well then, it will require losing the all or nothing mentality.  You might ask, should I lose it completely.  The answer is no.  I'm sure many so-called experts would be curious as to why I would say that.   But I will save that for another post.

Have you ever given up on eating clean and healthy because you missed a workout.  Or maybe you ate something off plan and then immediately determined the day was lost so you skipped the gym.  Or how about this: You slip up and eat something off plan and then begin a two-hour bingefest that ends with a groggy carb coma.  It's all or nothing baby!  Either I do it 100% or I don't do it at all.   Well then, maybe you don't do it at all.  Sound familiar?

The "all or nothing" mentality will ultimately destroy your goals and dreams if you don't learn how to put it aside, control it and diffuse it.  Notice I didn't say that you had to get rid of it completely?  Again, I'll save that for another post.  For now, let's just say it's imperative to bring it down more than a few notches if you find yourself in this excessive compulsive prison. This type of thinking and living can only lead to anxiety, disappointment, burnout and a lot of heartache.   If you are an "all or nothing" person, YOU are your OWN worst enemy. And, chances are, YOU already know this.

Do you want to get it under control?  Here are a few things you can do.

1.  Always Keep in Mind that this is Your Triumphant Story and NOT one Moment in Time

Today's victory comes from winning MOST of your battles but maybe not all of them.  If you slip up on your eating, commit to finishing the rest of the day strong.  If you're too tired to exercise or you're having a weak workout, push through it and do it EVEN if you need to cut it short and take it easier.  Lose the word "perfection" from your mental vocabulary and instead just give it your very best. Do this and you will find that you're getting closer to your goals with every step you take.  If you knew that you had traveled 99 miles and that you only had ONE more mile to go before you reached your Utopia, would you turn around and walk back?  No.  In fact, you would crawl that last mile on your hands and knees if you were absolutely sure that it would bring you to your dream place.  But when we abandon our healthy eating and exercise programs simply because of one little mistake, we do that very same thing.  Think about it.  This is YOUR Story. This is a story of victory.  A story where YOU are the hero and YOU will rise above the rest.  No great story comes without obstacles to overcome.  That kind of story would be boring.  Obstacles make you stronger and give you moments to grow and learn from.  Overcome them...one at a time with a smile on your face and heart filled with passion and persistence.

2.  Regain Focus as Soon as You Lose it

The very moment that you fall, get right back up and do the things that you know are going to bring you closer to where you want to be.  Remember why you're doing what you're doing and how good it will feel if you finish the rest of the day strong.  If you eat off plan, begin to drink your water and try to get back into the healthy mindset by reading through your goals.  Go for a long walk or get in an extra cardio session.  Get right back to where you need to be without wasting a second to think about it.  You must immediately see the rest of the day or night as you would want it to be and then live it in victory.

3.  See the Setbacks as Opportunities

Spend time considering why it is that you may have failed.  If you can find the emotional or situational trigger, then make a commitment to stay clear of it in the future. But, don't over-analyze.  Oh my gosh...why did I eat that burger?  Was it my emotional reaction to the girl at the gym who looked at me funny and told me I was still chubby?  Was it the way my boyfriend in high school always looked at the cheerleaders instead of me?  is it because the guy next to me at the gym pushed up more weight than I did?  Stop it!  Enough with the Boo Hoos already!  Maybe the food just tasted good. It's important to find the triggers if you can, but not good to get lost in it.  Say to yourself, what can I do tomorrow to make up for my mistakes today.  Then, move on soldier.

What's going through your mind right now? Do you struggle with this?  Be strong and be encouraged because you hold the keys to turn it all around.

What's going through my mind is that if it wasn't for the fact that I cheat SO much with food I would be SOOOO close to my dream body (in fact I AM close and that's what makes cheating such a bummer). Thankfully I push it hard in the gym and it helps offset but it doesn't get me to my ultimate goal without the clean eating. Everyday I make the gym a priority and I win but food....is a losing battle. How do I stay strong without making excuses (husband, young children, job). I'm SOO close but I'm standing in my own way and it's so frustrating!! Great post :)

Well put. These are lessons I an learning with time and determination. Thanks coach

I am happy to say I have learned this lesson. When I realized I didn't have to write the whole day off and could get back on plan with the next meal, the next workout, it literally changed everything. :) Someone once said that the most successful transformations come from people who make mistakes all over the place, they fall down, but they get right back up, they get right back on track. You don't have to be perfect! I used to think I had to be and if I made a mistake that WEEK was written off, and I would start again on Monday. How crazy! Excellent post Tony, and I love the picture, it made me laugh :)

I have been guilty of this one many times before. You have to identify the triggers and try to avoid them, but most of it, stop it right there when it happens, get up and keep walking. And it´s all within your mind to achieve that. No matter how much you want to keep on eating, if your mind strongly believes you can stop, you can. Thanks Tony!

I liked the part when you asked if we went 99 miles and had 1 mile to go would we turn around? I'm reminded of long distance Olympic runners whom I've seen cross the finish line crawling with torn muscles, or aided by supporters or walking, gasping for air in last place. But finish, they did. They had that winning attitude.

Another great message Tony! Perfectionism can be very dangerous in all aspects of life. It can overwhelm us into non-action which is always a VERY dangerous place to be!! This is a battle I fight every single day - sometimes I come out the winner and sometimes not. The important thing (for me anyway) is that I keep fighting. Remember to focus on the moment and if you slip, forget about it and jump right back in. Thanks again Tony!

This didn't fit in the last one: Beverley C., one thing that pops out to me is your statement "food...is a losing battle". I know it is hard because I struggle everyday with food but if you allow your mindset to go to the negative it will give you exactly that. As the quote goes: "You are what you think about" so if you think you are losing the battle with food you will! Your subconscious will make sure of it. I know it sound all guruish (my own little word) but try to keep your mind positive when it comes to food and just keep telling yourself that you are in control of what goes in your mouth - BECAUSE YOU ARE! You can do it - we all can. Just keep positive and keep on fighting!!

This post speaks to me. Tony, you and I both know I struggle with this on a daily basis. Just have to take it one day at a time. I WILL beat it!

Bev, I completely understand your frustrations. I think most wives and moms struggle with these same obstacles. Preparation not only with food but also your mind holds the keys to winning. But I think Cheryls' words were right on the mark. Every single word we use--whether spoken or ONLY thought--is shaping our actions and we're being subconsciously conditioned. Once we change the language, bahavior follows as habits are formed. Keep encouraging one another. Great posts!

I read this post just before walking into the gym last night... and it definitely resonated with me through my whole workout. One thought that stood out for me is how much I've had to learn self forgiveness. Very early on in my journey with DreamBodies I learned... and I say this all the time... when you are ALL you need to ride with it and push with it and when you are NOTHIN... just go through the motions until you can ride that high again. And forgiveness. This has really been my challenge lately... I want to be All again... and it's coming slowly... so I'm going through the motions, pushing when I can and accepting when I can't, but always going through the motions of clean eating, daily workouts, and staying focused on ME.

And that's why this is a journey and a lifestyle! Funny thing is Tony we learn all these lessons throughout the journey, many of them without you ever saying a word... although I always know you were thinking it :) I know others that have been with you a long time would agree ! LOL... you have a max 750 characters :)

Was just writing for my own blog and was thinking this belongs here... probably my greatest gift from my Dreambodies journey... has been learning to accept imperfection... when I typed that on my blog it brought me to tears... and you know why ! HUGE, HUGE, HUGE for me!!! I just think in the past when I couldn't acquire perfection... I would hide... I would let anxiety build... I would fail and give up... I couldn't attain it so what was the point... And you taught me imperfection is beautiful... I see it everywhere I look now... even in me.

This is af if you are talking directly to me. I have been with you twice and had given up twice because I suffered setbacks. I now know that focusing on one day at a time will get me the results I am looking for. Mary Ann

Okay... 1. This is an awesome quote "You must immediately see the rest of the day or night as you would want it to be and then live it in victory." 2. This made me burst out laughing!! "Oh my gosh...why did I eat that burger? ... Stop it! Enough with the Boo Hoos already! Maybe the food just tasted good." I'll begin to put these into action TODAY! Thanks for another good post, Tony.

Tony, thanks again for sharing. I use to give it an "all or nothing attitude" and I remember years ago a good friend told me "if you mess up with your meals....remember you can make the next one right." Wow, really I thought...I don't have to wait a day, week, month or until January to fix this one bad meal. Sounds crazy but I NEVER looked at it that way before and that one comment has stayed with me all these years.

Thanks to everyone for the words of encouragement. Thanks Blondell :) Yes, it's very important to find the triggers, address them, process them and then strategize. But some people get so "mentally" absorbed in defining the triggers, that the VERY dealing with it actually makes the mind become worse due to negative thinking. We need to be strong and be prepared to make the war of the mind our priority. I'll dig deeper in future posts.
