I know I promised to put up a post on the negative implications of alcohol on fat burning and muscle building, but I'll put that one up at another time.  This seems more important right now.

This past week I had more than a few conversations with clients who told me that they were not getting enough sleep.  Some of them were getting 4 hours, while others were only getting 5 hours a night.  Not good.  Not good at all.

Got a great question for you.  How would you like to be fat and old before your time?  If you're not getting enough sleep, that is exactly what you're doing.  I confess, I have an ongoing line that I like to use and blurt out.  When someone says to me, "Tony, you need to take it easy and get some rest. Don't push it too hard."  I always love to say back, "I'm not stopping or slowing down.  I'll sleep when I die."  LOL :)

Well, the joke is on me if I really believe that, and worse, live it.  Truth be told, without proper sleep you're only an empty shell of what you could possibly be if you were getting a good night's rest.

I want you to take that in for moment and read what I stated one more time.  If you're not getting at least 6-8 hours of sleep a night, then you are an EMPTY SHELL of what you could be.  This is serious and we all need to take it that way.

Failure on your current weight loss or exercise program could be directly related to your lack of sleep.  You can attribute cravings, over-eating and even weight gain to poor sleeping patterns.  But wait, it gets much worse than that.

There are many studies, recent and some dating back well over a decade, which find a direct correlation between lack of sleep and the following: hypertension, metabolic disorders, diabetes and memory loss to name a few.  Basically, these are all hallmarks of aging.

While I understand that some us have late nights which can seem to be out of our control, instead most of us choose to live that way.  Yes, it's important to have time to unwind from your busy day.  Otherwise, it sometimes seems like one day is just becoming part of another.  We need time to gather our thoughts and just kick back.  I get it.  Truly I do.  But, many of us are opting for the television or computer instead of sleep and that is a foolish decision.

If you're not getting enough sleep, serious negative implications will arise:

  • Increased weight gain and obesity.  There are many factors that could play a role in increased fat and weight gain.  Recent studies show an increased appetite for higher calories the day following sleep deprivation.  Particularly, carbohydrates were the main craving.  Lack of sleep can lead not only to increased calorie consumption, but most being in the form of carbs which could also impact blood sugar and fat storage.
  • lack of focus and mental clarity.
  • Sensitivity to stress leading to disorders such as depression, constipation and digestive issues.
  • Hormonal imbalance: Leptin & Grehlin are two hormones involved in body weight.
If Lack of sleep occurs too often, levels of Grehlin rises, causing greater appetite, and levels of Leptin will then decrease. Even though an individual may be involved in exercise, it's still possible that obesity is caused, or made worse, by sleep deprivation. Other hormones negatively affected are both thyroid and cortisol.  Put simply, no muscle gains will occur and fat will increase and get trapped around your waist as the outcome.
  • Weakened immune system
  •  Memory loss
  • Increased risk of high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes.

Interestingly, when those involved in the studies were able to benefit from the necessary sleep their bodies lacked (12-hours or more), all of the sleep deprivation abnormalities returned to normal.  However, it's worth noting that those who only caught 8 hours of sleep still did not get themselves back to full health.  All this to say, sleep is imperative to your fat burning, muscle building lifestyle.

How's your sleep doing lately?

Tony my sleep has been crappy lately! You know the problems i've been having...this makes so much sense. Thanks for the post!

Good post. All too often, people neglect this very important aspect of a healthy lifestyle. I didn't know that lack of sleep affects leptin and ghrelin. That is definitely reason to catch some ZZZs. LOL thanks for another great post, T!
Posted by Blondell on 03/20/2010 19:30:28
Yup, sure do April. That's why it's a good idea to literally get to bed extremely early for 2-3 days consecutively. Then, WATCH what happens :)
Posted by Tony on 03/20/2010 19:31:39
Blond, Yes, and the affects on cortisol and thyroid function are even more disturbing. We all need to be catching our zzzzzzzzzzzs :) You're welcome ladies!

wow I knew sleep was important but I didn't realize HOW important. My husband and I have been talking about this lately becuase he is normally a night owl and has been sleep deprived for ages, hes started going to bed early and getting 9 hours a night and he came BOUNDING in from work the other day and told me he couldn't believe how good he feels! Its time for me to do the same! The only thing is as I get leaner I start to have trouble getting to sleep even though I am exhausted, what natural sleep aids do you recommend Tony? Or is there anything you recommend?
Posted by Yvette R. on 03/20/2010 20:23:20
Yep - I definitely experience severe consequences when I don't get a good night sleep. EVERYTHING suffers then: my workouts, my work, my personal outlook on life, etc. which all lead to wanting to give up. CRAVINGS are crazy then too!!! I cherish my sleep like the most precious thing there is. Nothing stands between me and my sleep. :) Not any more anyway!! Thanks T for a great post and yet another great reminder!!! I better go to bed NOW ;)

Tony- i defintately relate to this one- i am a hormonal rollercoaster when i dont get enough sleep- last week all the traveling and messed up sleep schedules caught up to me on Thursday-- and i was a grouchy Zombie.

Like the rest who have posted I didn't realize how much sleep does truly affect everything else. I am really working on trying to get at least 7 hours if that means I go to bed at 8:00. I know if I don't get enough sleep I do have pretty bad food cravings and everything suffers. Thanks for the reminder on how important sleep really is.

@Yvette. I noticed that too about the leaner you get. I wonder what causes this. What sucks about it is that while leaning out, you're tired from the lowered cals and when you add to that lack of good, quality sleep, you end up w/ a MONSTER! lol I've used valerian root and melatonin. What are your thoughts on these 2, T?
Posted by Blondell on 03/21/2010 10:11:19
Great post Tony. A lot of people don't even consider this issue.

Nothing beats a 6 a.m. Dreambodies style workout to knock me right out the moment my head hits the pillow at night. LOL! Excellent post Tony.

I am curious about melatonin too. I used to be able to sleep like a hibernating bear and lately I can't sleep at all.

How does that sleep deprivation change if your getting your rest in spurts. Say 4 hours, a couple of hour naps, another couple of hours later? Would be an interesting study... Nice blog T-Man

Can you ever catch up on missed sleep? Sometimes I feel I can if I can get one night of a few more Zzzz"s. Thanks! Julie MF

Working the overnight shift for 14 years really did a number on my body. I started off slim and not worrying too much about my weight, but as I became more and more sleep deprived the weight started making more of an appearance. Now that I'm on day shift, I can FEEL the difference. I'm sure that once I get it all together again, my weight won't give me such a hard time. I LOVE SLEEP!

Got a 16 month old and 2 1/2 year old....i'm reading this after being up half the night listening to one kid coughing :( It is what it is right now.

ahaa.... I think I finally landed on the place I wanted to .... to leave a message... I am finding that I MUST have 8+ hours of sleep a night or I am just NOT FUN to be around. with cardio very early in the morning... that means I'm in bed by 9 am... WOW... now that is interesting.... Sure does allow for me to be creative with my planning. going to find me some memory... LOL might have left it on the pillow last night.... it is time for cardio NOW... we had a nasty storm here so the gym is closed..

My ideal is 8hrs of sleep, I usually get 7, don't do well at all with less than 6...grouchy & not safe to commute 1.5 hrs to work! I can show this article to the people that say I'm "spoiled" for wanting my 8hrs sleep---thanks Tony. Congrats Cory on winning the protein shake :)

Some good questions here and some funny but TRUE realities... I will post more later. Bev, "It is what it is right now". Yes, sometimes that is just the way it is . Do your best. I feel you, really :) Troy and Julie, there have been numerous studies done and it's true that broken sleep can be unhealthy. However...
Posted by Tony on 03/24/2010 16:03:41
...There are also a host of studies which show correlation between short naps and improved health and vitality in relation to better hormone regulation. So, in other words, ANY extra sleep is better than being deprived. But, you can still be in an UNHEALTHY place until you get a few nights of good, solid, uninterrupted sleep. If you can, DO IT!

Blondell, April, Yvette...I like melatonin but I believe it must be supplemented with HMB powder in order to work well. I would take a melatonin supplement "consistently" While also taking about 1-2 grams of HMB about 30 minutes before bed. Start with only 1 gram. The melatonin takes a while to metabolize so you want to KEEP taking it daily. HMB will DO the trick :)

This blog on sleep is so needed! I have underestimated my sleep...!!! It affects way too many areas of my life (all of which are negative!) Thank you for addressing this Tony. I know that our bodies naturally produce melatonin....have taken it before; not sure if taking a supp of melatonin is all so good, since the body naturally produces it (???) Gonna check this out (thanks!). Thank you Tony for this wonderful blog!
Posted by Sarah Morris on 03/24/2010 22:02:21
Thanks Sarah for the input. Yes, the body does produce it naturally (from the pineal gland). Unfortunately, however, most people do not produce enough naturally. Point of Melatonin would be to help re-regulate your internal sleeping clock which is the problem for most and melatonin is one of the only remedies. But once that is done, you can lay off and only stick with the HMB :)
Posted by Tony on 03/24/2010 22:15:24
8 hours of sleep?....hmmm...my body is not wired for that...sounds heavenly...no matter what time i go to bed...im up in 5 hours...if i go to bed early..like 8pm...i'll be bright eyed and bushytailed by 1 or 2am....if i go out at nite and come home at 4am...im up by 9am...i had imsomnia for years...the Ambien made me way groggy the next day....so i guess i'll hafta stick with my 5 hours!
