If I heard it once, I heard it a thousand times.  "I Just need to lose this 20 lbs for the Wedding or Reunion."

So what happens?  Well, the wedding or reunion comes and goes.  Yup, maybe the 20 lbs was lost in time.  But what followed was so painful and horrible that is has now left you in a cycle that is crippling you emotionally and maybe even physically.  In fact, you can't even go near the mall or clothing store because you can't stomach what the mirror is reflecting back.  Sure, you lost the 20 lbs.  But now it returned with excess pounds--many, many extra pounds.  The "diet" you tried only took you back even further in your pursuit of your dream body.

Any of this sound familiar?  Fast weight loss by way of a quick diet or panacea program will always result in being worse off than when you started.  Do diets work?  Well, yes, maybe for a short time.  However, in the end, trust me you will regret BIG TIME what it did to your body and your metabolism.

In this post I don't want to address the physical and metabolic ways in which a diet can truly ruin your body, but instead take you deeper into the HOW and WHY the "diet mentality" will always fail you and why you may always seem to be running in circles around the same approach.

1.  Undefined Values-  This one is huge and it's the very foundation you build your life on.  If your reason for getting into shape is to look good for some upcoming event, then what happens when the occasion is over?  Where will you find your motivation then?  Most do not find any reason and so they go back to where they were--only worse.  You must build your vision for your dream body on true and meaningful values.  Values such as: Being healthy inside and out.  Looking and feeling young so that you can enjoy a long life with family and loved ones. Setting an example for those in your life who may look up to you.   Ask yourself this, "What's most important to me about getting healthy and having a great body?"  Then list those values.  There is NOTHING wrong with wanting to look lean, hot and sexy.  In fact, you SHOULD want that.  But it must go deeper if it is to last a lifetime. Build your goals on values.

2.  Afraid of Failure-  I get this one all of the time.  I sometimes will go back and forth with possible clients who tell me they tried everything else and failed.  "So Tony, what makes your program any different than the rest?"  We are afraid to fail and sometimes it can keep us in places of pain indefinitely.  We don't want to keep making the same mistakes over and over again so we stop doing anything at all.  But think about it, is the alternative working for you?  No.  Inactivity will always rob your dreams one day at a time until you can't even see them anymore.  Lose fear for focus.  Focus in your values and where you want to go and then set a plan down.  Find a program or meal plan that aligns with those values and goals and give it all you got.  Failure will always be a part of life but you can learn how to USE it and not be USED by it.

3.  Fear of Being Judged-  Many are scared that those around them will just beat them over the head with the endless comments.  "Another fat loss program, huh?" ... "Are you going to fail that one like you did the last one?" ...  "Why are you exercising so much, what's wrong with you?" ... "Keep eating chicken like that and you will turn into one."  Well, cluck--cluck--cluck goes Tony.  So what!  If I can't live for my priorities, my body and my health, who will do it for me.  Listen, everybody has something to say.  Let it ride and roll past it.  Explain your values and goals to those closest to you.  Ask for their support.  If they give it, great!  If not, move on.  Will you want to come to the end of your life with your fallen dreams built on this lame excuse?

4.  Fighting Change-  We are creatures of habit.  Most people hate change.  Change of schedule.  Change of lifestyle.  Change of meal planning.  Yet, without change there is NO growth--period!  As difficult as it may seem, change can and will bring about all that you ever wanted in life.  Not only that, but the very things you feared can and WILL become habits...healthy habits.  Embrace change.  The key is to do it slowly and with your eyes wide open.  Diets fail but lifestyle changes last forever.  Think about it.

5.  I Can Do it on My Own!-   I'm sorry but no you can't.  Well, at least not long term, especially if your goal is to be your absolute best.  Even the best of the best need support, accountability and empowerment.  Surround yourself with others who share the same goals and hold the same values.  Hire a trainer or coach.  Read books and enroll in courses which can influence and guide you into a healthy lifestyle.

Diets are temporary.  Lifestyle changes that are built on growing goals and dreams lasts forever!  Go get yours :)

Great post Tony, I think I am struggling with undefined values at the moment.

We will talk this week Yvette. Email me your schedule for the next two days :)

Another excellent post Tony. I constantly struggle w/ fear of being judged- family or past bf's saying I was looking anorexic when I was actually feeling healthy, guys commenting about how I "lost my boobs or butt", comments from coworkers when I don't participate in their constant potlucks...the list goes on :(

And I'm also guilty of 'afraid of failure' or at least I think it falls under that category : my lower body , yes- the booty, legs & belly needs so much work that I'm afraid it will never get to where it will even look decent; my upper body on the other hand develops fairly easily and nice :) So without symmetry "MY" dreambody will never look like the other girls so then it goes back to "fear of being judged" by not looking a certain way that I think people expect when they think of a 'dreambody'. I obviously need a lot of the MENTAL coaching, right Tony?

I have been afraid of failure for a long time. Afraid that I put all this effort into exercising and eating right that my body won't change. I 'll be disappointed. I don't see how my body can change when it has been this large for so long. Even though I am benefiting health wise from the healthier food and exercising, I'm scared to look in the mirror 6 months from now and see that nothing has changed. But I've put my faith in Tony and I am daring to dream that maybe my body will change.

Katalin, as you're going to learn and see, fear in all its forms can and will be transformed into powerful and useable strength and energy. As for the mental coaching, we all need to stay on top of that. The great news is this: this never gets old and this lifestyle is exciting and only gets better. "Samadhi40", your faith will not be in vain. My word on that :)

I put my faith in you Tony and have competed 4 times. I agree with Yvette. I need to practice the undefined values.

April, Yes, the issue of understanding and OWNING values is a big one. It keeps you rooted in your foundation when the WHY question hits you. "WHY" am I doing this? We all get hit with that. My D3 group is working through that extensively now. But it's something we all need to practice. We will talk :)

Wow Tony I absolutely love this post. There are so many reasons why people (especially women) fail on their fitness journey. All of which are warranted reasons; however, we all have the choice to overcome those "reasons" and build a stronger foundation. We have to always look at it as a lifestyle change instead of a short term goal BUT not overwhelm ourselves with the results. It will absolutely drive one crazy.

Awesome post Tony! I'm also present to the fear I live with. Before I took the step forward with you that I've wanted to for years, I really became aware of how much fear runs my life. Fear success, of failure, of staying the same, of changing. To overcome this overwhelming suffocating fear I told myself I would begin doing at least one thing every day that scared me. The next day I jumped in the proverbial pool with both feet and have not looked back! I am interested in the mind training towards moving fear into motivational energy, and I look forward to the life ahead of me!

I definitely agree! I"ve changed around my whole lifestyle in order to have the healthy habits and body that I have now. It should never be a temporary thing.. we should want to live by it for life!

Elizabeth & Cami, thanks. Elizabeth, very true! Women face issues that men do not face and that is the bottom line. But you're right, the choice to overcome is one that MUST be made. Finger pointing will only last so long. Cami, YOU ARE ROCKIN IT! No turning back now. Ladies, pass this post along to others. I know many need to read it.

You're welcome Katalin!

Hi Tony, I thought of you today during my lunch hour in the cafeteria :) It was the cafeteria of a hughes and famous Medical Center (without saying the name, it's 1 of the best in the West). At least 150-200 people having lunch, mostly employees, some visitors; I imagined you coming in and just shaking your head from what you'd see: overfilled plates, desserts, sodas, and although I only work there about 1-2x a month, what I saw today is probably an every day 'ritual'. You'd think most people in the health care field would eat better & would be a better role model!

I'm not private about the meals I eat. I pack them each morning and bring them with me throughout my day. My friends see me eating cleanly, and they see the incredible results, and yet still they tell me how unhealthy my diet is, and how unhealthy losing weight so quickly is. I reply with the nutrition facts I consume, but it leaves me wondering, what's the difference between the meal plan and a diet really? Is it just the length of time on it, or my commitment to it? If I stop tomorrow, these past months will have been a crazy diet, so the only thing that makes this a lifestyle change, is what I choose to eat at any given moment. Well now it seems its not so much a meal plan, as it is a choice I get to make each time I'm hungry.

Michael, Not a surprise about your friends. But it never ceases to amaze me how others will delude themselves with anything and everything so long as they can justify their unhealthy lifestyles. Wow, clean protein and lots of vegetables and nutrient-packed foods are now "unhealthy"??? If it wasn't so sad, it would be funny. Keep kickin it hard Michael! You're doing incredible.
