Watch what you say!  Do you realize the impact that your words have on your behavior?  If you keep taking your words for granted, they will keep taking you further away from your goals and your ultimate body.

Let's take the word, hope, for example.  Hope can be a horrible thing!  Do I have your attention yet?  Good.  Now follow me.

I hear this word being used almost on a daily basis by clients and friends.  They say, "I hope that I can stay on the meal plan this weekend"..."I hope that I find the energy to hit that cardio with intensity"..."I hope that I can lose this final 5-10 Lbs".  I Hope...I hope...I hope.

What are they really saying?  I can tell you what they're saying.  They're saying, I wish.  I wish I could eat clean this weekend.  I wish I could lose this last 5 Lbs.  I wish I could get stronger, leaner, tighter...whatever.  It's all just wishful thinking.

Yes, hope in its ultimate reality is a beautiful thing.  In fact, the word hope if used properly and in the right context can bring new life .  But we're not talking in the biblical or spiritual sense here.  No, we're talking with language that we know and use every single day in common conversation.  And in this culture, the word hope is nothing more than an expression of longing.  Unfortunately, this does NOT help to condition your mind for success since you have spent years of your life "wanting" certain things but not always getting them.  Again, it goes back to wishful thinking.

Your words shape your thoughts and your thoughts shape your actions.  Ever hear someone say this: "I just look at food and I gain weight."  This is a sure way to set your mind against you in more ways than you can ever imagine.

Your mind is very complex organism.  If you believe your thoughts, they are real to you regardless of whether they are true or false.  Now consider how serious that is to your behavior.  It is imperative to ALWAYS think and speak positively about yourself and your actions.  Is it easy?  No.  But will it change your life?  Yes!  Your thoughts are shaping your destiny.

Let me give you an example.  This is a true story based on my own personal experience.  No, this is not typical.  But hey, I'm not typical :)  Here goes...

This story goes back about 15 years.  I was in the gym and trying to break a new bench press record.  My body was totally shot and drained.  But, as tired and weary as my body was, my mind was far worse.  I had nothing left.  I mean, I was spent.  Sometimes all the years of mental training in the world just can't give you everything you need.  This was one of those days...or so I thought.  My friend took the barbell off the bench and I grabbed the 485 Lbs in my hands.  I said, "I got it!"

As I lowered the bar to my chest, I could feel the weight was not going back up.  Ever been there?  Well, it landed on my chest and I pushed but couldn't get it up.  I was not happy.  As I got up from the bench a guy in the gym came up to me and said, "Hey, it's not your day.  We all have our days big boy.  Save it for tomorrow."

Oh no you didn't!  I wanted to rip him open.  But at that moment my competitive nature took over my roughneck attitude (rare for me), and I made the following wager.  I said, "Hey, who are you talking to?  You don't know me, man. How about you put your money where your mouth is."

He said, "What do you mean?  I didn't mean anything by it.  Really.  Sorry if I offended you."   I said, "No, you didn't offend me.  You just pissed me off.  And that, will cost you."  He said, "Wait a minute.  I'm sorry."  I said, "No, I mean COST you money as in I want to make a bet with you.  How much weight just fell on my chest?"

He looked at the bar and did the math.  Then he said, "490 Lbs."  I said, "Ok.  What if I add another 20 lbs to that bar?  Do you think I can get it?"  He said, "No way.  The 490 landed on you.  How you going to get 510 Lbs? "   I said, "I got $50 that says I will get it up."

He turned and said, "You're on!"

At this point, we had at least a dozen people gathering around us to watch this.  My training partner put another 20 Lbs on the bar and shook his head.  His exact words to me were, "T, T, you're crazy man."  I smiled and said, "This is no time for compliments."

It was then that I got completely focused in my own mind.  I shut out everything and everyone and I began to do some extreme visualization techniques.  And, a whole lot of prayer :)

I grabbed the bar and my partner lifted it off and gave it over to me.  I pressed it up for 3 full reps.  Not one rep.  Not two reps.  But Three! I got up, turned to the barbell and said, "You lose."

That was not only a new bench press record for me that day, but a mental awakening like never before.  I mean, I knew the power of my mind was vast, but I had no idea the depths stretched so great physiologically and physically.  I still practice those visualization techniques to this very day.  Needless to say, the $50 bucks meant nothing to me.  I told the guy to keep it.

Your words are shaping you in far more ways than you may even understand.  Stop using words that tear you down.  Stop using words that negatively impact your thoughts and actions.  Speak positively about yourself ALL of the TIME--no matter what!  No more words of hope....ONLY victory that is and will be.  Speak positively in the present and future tense and watch things change in your life.

Perfect timing! It's been a rough week with a lot of negative thoughts and, in turn, negative results. Thanks for the reminder to keep my thoughts positive.

Great posts! I've done the "fat talk" in the past but now try to keep my thoughts positive.. negative ones only bring you down!

Mark, Thanks a lot mty friend. Go kill those workouts. My experience that day with the bench press really proved to me that our mental state of mind has direct impact chemically and physilogically on our bodies. My body responded because of shifts in thought and focus. Unreal!

Hey, T, You hit it on the HEAD. I have FINALLY applied this technique to my career - saying all day long how much I LOVE to have tons of money and opportunities open up every time I turn around! I HAVE TO apply this same technique to my fitness. I have been in a negative mindset lately, as you know. Pushing through it physically is a must, but better than that is to say, "I LOVE to push myself to the limit. I LOVE to see the scale reflect all my hard work. I LOVE to feel fitter and thinner than I ever have in my life." Whether or not I feel my fittest today, I can honestly say that I LOVE WHEN I DO. And the next step from there is loving that I am feeling it because now it's TRUE!

Karina! Thank You so much! Your star is already shining. It's only a question of becoming brighter and brighter and brighter. Never doubt yourself. You have what it takes :)

Dawnalyn, I completely understand and know the how and the why. But you will overcome. We both know that :) Stay strong! Always here for you.

April, thanks a lot! I think WE ALL are guilty from time to time. Over time, we can overcome it and gain control over it. This is the stuff that dreams are made of...if most would just grasp the incredible importance of it. Stay positive and in touch :)

Lii...You are someone who not only chases dreams, but grabs hold of them. I have NO DOUBT that you will get all that is yours. NO DOUBT.

You hit it out of the ballpark on this one Tony. I REALLY need to start more positive thinking. I know it works. When I first started this health journey I believed in myself and things happened. Now i'm having a woes is me moment and not so good things are happening. That stops NOW Thanks!!!!...as usual.

Tony!! YOU are such an incredible inspiration to all of us! Thank you for not only helping guide my body to where I dream of being, but also helping me to guide my thoughts, my language, my actions. Thoughts become things - or so I've heard.... and you are RIGHT ON with this!! It's amazing to me how easily overlooked this principle is. But if we pay attention to our thoughts, especially our internal diaglogue with ourselves, we have the power inside to truly cause the miraculous to happen in our lives! Thank you for pointing the way!!

Awesome post and story Tony! I just said that to someone the other day! =0 I look at cake and get fat, I won't say that again, its time to put as much or more work into my mind that I put in at the gym. You have a gift of inspiring people and making them feel like they can take on the world!

That's just what I needed, Tony. When I think about the past few months, and all the progress I've made, the one thing that was constant throughout was a positive attitude, noticing the changes each day, and loving the way I felt and looked. No more negativity about the way I've been eating. I'm back on track.

Good going Michael! The last few months have begun to lay a foundation for an incredible future!

I had to wait until I was really into reading to get to this post. lol Good stuff. I spoke to the guy from the gym and he said to take the 50 off of next month's fees for some chick named Blondell. Visualization WORKS! I use it when going for new PRs and I get them every time. I can't recall one time when I haven't. I used to brush it off as 'stupid' but once I tried it, I don't wanna do without it. In fact, I use it for the days when I just don't feel like training. Works for that too!

Tony, I needed this. It is right on time. I need to push myself mentally in the gym more than I have. Your last paragraph of the blog really summed up this entire blog. Thank you for helping to push me! I'm gonna drop that 7lbs in 2 wks. Thanks. :)
Posted by Sarah on 04/23/2010 19:09:11
You're welcome Sarah! I KNOW you will drop that weight :) Blondell, Love it! And I agree--especially about the workout visualization. MOST people NEVER visualize their workouts. This is a tool that they ignore which could totally change the intensity and progress in workouts. I spend time EVERY DAY before each workout to VISUALIZE every SET!

Wow, Tony,"I hope" sure woke me up. I Was doing great until I just didn't do great anymore. I took my body for granted figuring I got the body I want and I can maintain it. A little cheat here and a little cheat there won't hurt yet in the same sentence I was saying I hope to compete one day, I hope to gain a little more muscle, I hope to drop and little more body fat. Today I'm not just hoping, I know I can do this, there is no hoping, if I want it I need to go get it and do the homework. It's up to me, if I want to compete next year, I will be ready! I am the only one that can control my mind set, Thanks Tony, I am excited to get started, looking forward to our phone conversation Monday!
