NO FIRE...NO FOCUS!

PART ONE

Man, sometimes it can just seem all too elusive. Peep this little story. Based on my own true experiences. While it doesn’t happen often, it does happen.

Okay, so I get to the gym. I crank up the Mp3 player in my head. I do a minute or two of visualization. I focus on the coming workout. Then I flex the muscles for a minute or two in the bathroom mirror.   I’m ready to go. I leave the gym bathroom like I was heading into the ring for a heavyweight title fight (I remember those days). I mean, I’m feeling this. I get to the treadmill to warm up a bit. But wait…

What happens next is just ridiculous. I start a short walk or run and then I do something so bad that I will kick myself for it later in the day. In fact, I will kick myself all day.
What is it that I do?
I grab my gear, hop off the treadmill and I leave. I flat walk out of the gym! I just drove thirty minutes to get to this gym only to look at myself in the mirror. Damn, I could have done that at home :)

Has this ever happened to you? Have you ever just completely lost focus and felt defeated before even began? If not, consider yourself blessed. It happens to the best of us and there are ways to overcome it.
However, I’m not talking about one workout here and there. I’m talking about being in a funk for days and maybe even weeks. I believe the answer to this disease comes down to one word…just one. I will reveal that in Part 2.

In this post I thought it would be good to share some of the thoughts and words of our DreamBodies team members and clients who have experienced the same. Following that I will discuss how I personally overcome it 99 out of 100 times. Hey, sometimes you’re just not in the mood. If that’s the case, go home and sleep it off. Here we go…

How do you find your focus if you lost it?

"When I get centered in my heart and find the answers to those questions - I am reminded of the inner & physical strength, courage and inspiration it provides me.  I recall that it makes me a more peaceful, enlivened, and passionate individual. I actually get to LOVE who I am by doing this!  It's as though when the fire has gone out, by focusing on the embers that are still smoldering, I am able to bring the fire alive again and find renewed energy to push myself harder.

It's important to know our own reasons for why we set out to achieve our dreams. Without knowing why, there is no fire that will burn long enough to light your path.  Eventually we all venture into the dark, unknown on the journey to our dreams... and knowing YOUR deepest reasons why will be your torch when you stand all alone." ---Cami Krueger

"I pick up the phone and I call you bro! Seriously I get that a lot from time to time and I noticed that it happens most when I’m stressed from work or the girlfriend. I like to do the music-visualization techniques you taught me. If that doesn’t work, I dig deep and just push through it at a much lower level of intensity for a while."   --- John Lester

"I lose myself in reading and writing about what I really want and what I don’t. This helps me to clarify my purpose. I think that sometimes we just need to step back. But I found that most times we hide behind that and let it linger too long. Get moving no matter what if the focus is hard to find. Move!!!"–- Daphne Gilmore

"I've had this happen more times than I care to admit! However, I've found what works for me. I take a week (or two) off! This DOES NOT mean that I eat crap and sit on my butt all day. There are times that I just need the break, though. I allow myself a few treats, work out only if I really want to, and in a week or two, I'm usually so fired up to get things rolling again that it's almost impossible to keep me from seeing major physique changes over the next few weeks."  –- Blondell Dalton
"Gosh, I hate when I lose focus and I feel like I'm only just getting out of it now.  Guess that's why I needed to hear your voice for almost 2 hours the other day (LOL).   All I can say is that for me I need someone like you to set me straight and put it all into perspective.  After we talked, I felt reborn and alive again.  Might sound weird, but that is how it felt.  People need to find others who can help them and encourage them especially if they don't get it at home.  My husband does not get it and it kills me.  Thank you Tony for being you.  You can't be replaced by anybody!" -- Jessica Navarra
When I lose focus I go back to what worked in the first place for me.  Some of the things you taught me about goal setting and mind conditioning has been invaluable.  I use it at work and in the gym.  My wife does too.  I find that when I spend time in mind conditioning and visualization, it brings me to a place where I have hope again.  I need hope.  Don't we all? -- Jim Barker
I feel like I'm drowning right now.  I lost my focus for everything 3 weeks ago when my boyfriend left me for this chick down the way.  At one time I was always able to get it back but now it seems harder.  What helped me in the past was to listen to some inspirational music and write in my diary.  But now, it's not happening :(  -- Dawn M

Thanks to all those who shared.  Dawn, hang in there.  Email me if you want some one-on-one.  I'll do what I can to empower you.  Your situation is rooted in your emotional state right now and that can be much more difficult to deal with.  I'll help you.
So how about you?  Have you lost focus?  Do you know how to get it back so that it lasts?
In part 2, I will share my personal strategy.
Share your thoughts with us.

I've totally lost focus in the past month, after months and months of working out 5-6 days a week, eating super clean and not drinking, I've somehow gone back to doing zero activity and drinking again (still doing pretty ok with the food). I haven't been to the gym in a month - this is nuts coming from someone who almost didn't accept a free vacation because she might have to be away from a gym for a week! Can't wait for part 2, hopefully it'll give me a kick in the ass!

Things that have worked for me is: 1.Taking a bit of a break from the gym, like Bondell said after about week I am dying to get back. 2.Clarifying my goals. Also for me having goals that have to do with what I can DO not just how I want to look, makes the process more fun. Setting some new goals, I have to have a strong passion for my goal for it to move me to action. I recently made a mini vision board for my goals to help me REMEMBER why I am doing what I do. 3. Trying something new, a yoga class, or dance class at the gym. 4. Visualization is really powerful and something I have used a lot. 5. Talking with someone about your goals, talking to Tony always helps immensely :)

I am used to being in a rut.going nowhere fast.but in the Gym...it is all me...i am in control there, probably the only place i am in control..how much cardio...how fast...how heavy the weights i use...There are times i do drift off inbetween reps...thinking of my life..and the changes about to happen..but i change the song ..concentrate on my breating..see how my muscles are getting cut..and allow myself that hour of peace for me and only me!The rest of the world can wait.

Did I need this blog!!!!Since going on annual training for military(Guard) nearly 2weeks and visiting my family for about a wk I gained nearly 5lbs! Due to my training,I wasn't able to work out and the chow was not good, nor the MRE's(meals ready to eat).I missed my veggies and yummy salads. I know stress added on to the weight.I love my family, but I can't live like them. It's been challenging getting back into the routine. I let this affect me mentally and therefore put off things that will get me closer to my goals. The 'mental pit fall' and procrastination gets one even further down.

What has helped me is when I started reflecting very recently about how good I felt when I was working out & eating clean consistently, just as Cami put it so well."I am reminded of the inner & physical strength, courage & inspiration it provides me.I recall that it makes me a more peaceful, enlivened, and passionate individual.I actually get to LOVE who I am by doing this!"I started working on my multi-sensory scenes (D3)!!! & that hit a spark as well.Reminding myself that this is a journey, a marathon,& not a sprint.

Rather than see the mistakes I've made, learn from them,PICK myself UP,dust myself off so to speak(every day's a new day!)& MOVE ON (like Daphne said)! It is a process, and it is about making PROGRESS.One thing I need to do is reach out(like John says), rather than feeling guilty & bad about what happened.Been avoiding & procrastinating Tony...hold me accountable please.I need to jump in & quit dragging my feet!

This may sound cruel or odd- but when i lose focus and want to have a cheat meal or not workout I go to places like fast food joints and look at the people eating the worst food there- and use their lack of focus to re energize my focus. I see where i was and where i am now and know i dont ever want to go back there. If inactivity and crappy food will make me look like some of the people in those places-- i don't want any part of it...... then i get a protein shake and head for the gym, a hike, a bike ride- anything to make me feel strong, clean and healthy.

Lori, I hear you on that. You are right though. Thanks for sharing. I need to implement what you've shared b/c I've done what you're talking about and it does work. It IS a great motivator.

Tony, my friend, it's now been 2 months since I achieved my Dreambody working with you for a year. Haven't talked to you in a while. But I've been reading your blogs and newsletters. Keep up the excellent work. I'm not gonna lie. I indulge in the old foods that got me fat on occasion. But I ask God to help me resist overeating these fatty, buttery or sugary treats. I love the desire I now have for healthy, whole, clean foods. Also, I pray for strength to renew my desire to go the gym each day I have a workout planned. Like magic, He gets me there. I'm not trying to get all holy up in here, but to anyone reading this: if you are a person of faith, don't forget about the power of prayer.

I have been on a downward slope for a while. I am not sure why it is this way. I have alot going on in my life right now. I workout and then eat crap or its the other way around. I do not do what I need to on a daily basis. I need someone to shake me to snap me out if this!

In my opinion, you cannot wait for the feeling to come back and sometimes you cannot write about why you lost it to find it. Sometimes you just have to pick your sorry ass up and say I'm doing it and the feeling will come. If we all WAIT for the feeling to come back, it may never. Do the ACT and the feeling will come.

I agree so much with everyone's comments here! This is a great community of people who really help support one another, and I'm really inspired by it. What Julie shared, just above, for me is key! Relying on the way that I 'feel' really can be THE contributing factor to losing focus. Nobody FEELS like working out, and eating clean, every single day for years on end. For me, if I can set my feeling aside (this applies to every goal I'm out to accomplish) and look instead for what I'm committed to in life... the actions come naturally in alignment with my committment.

Tony, I believe one very powerful thing to help combat this challenge is knowing that people are counting on me. People's lives are counting on me and what I do.... I am beginning to see that people more and more look up to me and that helps me hold myself accountable for clean eating and getting my workouts in. I noticed that I've "upped my levels of intensity" in my workouts just for the fact that I'm going to get hired on as a personal trainer. That helps motivate me and keeps me going b/c people are counting on me!
