I will Never Lose weight...

I'm a fat pig...

I love to Eat junk food...

I hate to workout...

I'll never get ripped abs...

I enjoy my wine at night...

I hate the mirror...

I'm never going to change...

I hate myself... (this one is VERY dangerous)

Any of these sound familiar?  I have been working a lot with my clients lately on how to overcome negative self-talk.  Let me be clear on this.  It WILL keep you down and in the same destructive cycles now and always, IF you don't take it seriously and stop it.

You are a product of words, images and actions.   They all play a part in developing and conditioning WHO you are and WHO you are becoming.  In other words, on a daily basis, you are actively shaping your destiny with the words you use and the words and images you take in.

Now, you can't always control the actions of others or the words they may use against you. But, you CAN completely control the words you speak about yourself and your goals.  Once you understand this, your life begins to change course ALMOST IMMEDIATELY!

Let me use a client of mine as an example.  When Cynthia started my program 3 years ago, her final words to me on the phone before she hung up were, "Well, I trust you Tony so I sure hope this works."

My reply was, "Well then, you will fail."

After she giggled a nervous laugh and then asked me what I meant, I shared with her something very, very important.

Every single word you use in your vocabulary is tied to your life and your past failures and successes.  The word "hope" simply means, "wish".  I asked Cynthia, "how many times have you used that very statement about all the programs and supplements you've tried in the past?"

She said, "Probably all of them."

I told her to change the word "hope" to the word "believe" and start speaking that every single day as often as possible.

Now here we are three years later.  She has lost 67 pounds and walks around like she owns the world.  In fact, she speaks so confidently about herself that she gets accused of being cocky.  She is not cocky, only confident.

Here are some fast techniques to apply.

1.  Find out what negative words you keep repeating over and over again and write them down.  Then, find powerful, positive words that remove the negative or apathetic nature of those words.  Begin to replace them aggressively.

2.  Get index cards and write down your positive sentences and words.  Put the cards on your fridge, in the car, on the nightstand--everywhere!  Read them even when you don't FEEL like it. The impact will be transforming.

3.  Journal every single night about the language you used that day.  Be honest with yourself and make note of any words or phrases that might be infecting you.  Commit to STOP using them.

Whether or not you accept it, your words are shaping your destiny.

Why would you want to keep getting kicked in the face with the same ball?

You don't.  You just never realized that you kept sticking your face out.

If you want to live in beautiful body, take control over your words.  They shape your mind and ultimately, your heart!

Tony- great post. Positive self talk has helped tremendously over the last 3 years and it continues to fuel my transformation. I would like to add-"thoughts are things too" because it is just as important to guide your thoughts to being positive to achieve positive results. thanks for being an inspiration every day

This is amazing Tony, I have been struggling with this pretty hard lately. I am going to make this change and take control of my life. Not let me hold myself back any longer. I am GREAT and now I need to make my brain believe it and stop listening to the subconscious girl who wants me to fail. With your help and my drive I will be able to become the woman I know I can be and to shape my future to my dreams.

Awesome blog T!! I cannot even begin to describe the tremendous difference altering my self-talk has made for my life! It has made an entire transformation possible. I still catch myself once in awhile berating something about myself - but the great news is that now, I CATCH IT! And then I get to change it!! This is such an overlooked aspect of our lives - we're the only person we talk to all day long, every day. I know for me, I've become my own best friend! It's a beautiful thing! :) Thanks Tony for your coaching, support and inspiration!

Great post Tony! I am going to get a notebook and start journaling right away. Its funny how even when you THINK you are being positive, you can still be wording things in a negative way.

Hey T.yes i am blogging again. It's been a while. But this post is awesome. Words and thoughts can set the mood for the day or week! If i see someone at the gym with the arms or legs I want,i don't sigh and wish,I crank my iPod and work harder. When the people at work or friends ask me how i lost the weight and what DIET am I on,(some think Im too skinny..lol)I always sing your praises, and tell them about the LIFESTYLE change I made,it's not a diet. Diets are temporary, and so will be your weight loss if that's how you go about it mentally.. So off to the gym I go..Thank you Tony, as always you rock..and im doing arms today no matter what!
